Elm Tree Primary Academy

British Sign Language (BSL)

Exciting News!

We are delighted to say that as a school we have introduced British Sign Language as a curriculum subject.

As a school, with a Suffolk County Council Resource Base for the Deaf, we understand the need to communicate through signing.

Recently, we were delighted to learn that ex-pupil Daniel Jillings campaigned successfully to have BSL considered as a GCSE subject.

BBC News: Daniel Jillings

Our new BSL teacher is Daniel's mum, Ann Jillings. Each class, from Year 1 - Year 6, has a BSL lesson each week. Our aim is for our Year 6 to be confident to take the BSL 101 Youth Level 1 assessment.

BSL and finger spelling has also been proven to support children with word spelling.
